July24, 2009, Multiply, Intruder in the garden

Intruder in the Garden

I have been so preoccupied with getting things done in the garden I failed to notice I have an intruder. I can’t remember what I planted in this particular container, but what ever it was, it wasn’t this !!

What ever I planted………..it would have been a herb, mint or coriander or something, failed to thrive and withered away with out a trace. In its place grew this.
I have no idea what it is but I suppose I should go look it up and find out exactly who  my self seeding  intruder is.

It's definitely a tree or a bush. LOL. Whatever it is, it's healthy.

If it is a forsythia it will bloom in the spring and it looks like a forsythia

Can't help I'm afraid. I may take a lot of flower and plant shots, but I know the names of almost none of them!!

You do know a Weed is only in the mind of the gardener......so call it your Surprise Plant as it was a gift.

The birds and the bees love the flowers and the trees... Flying-over pollination at its best. I expect that a little bird 'dropped' off a seed. :-}

Thank you Frank.............I think you are right, it certainly looks more like Forsythia than any thing else I can see, which is a bit odd cos I can't see another one any where around here, none of the neighbours have one so I don't know where the seed came from. The hedge I cut back was a privit hedge

well since what you planted did not come up, this orhan intruder will have to fill the void..... lol....

veryfrank wrote on Jul 24, '09
What is your hedge that you have been cutting on?

That looks like a forsythia to me. I agree that it is a shrub or tree.

Forsythia

Yep, I think it is a tree seedling of some sort--it's quite robust looking. We have a somewhat similar plant in Louisiana we call a laurel oak http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/4h/Laurel_oak/laureoak.htm don't know if that helps, but I bet it would be happy in the ground this autumn! Have Fun!

sumac looks to have leaves in pairs on the stem..........apposite each other and these leaves are not like that

forgetmenot525 wrote on Jul 24, '09
ok thanks looking up sumac and verbena

kathyinozarks wrote on Jul 24, '09
its not sumac, as we have lots of sumac all over here in the wild, I don't know what it is either-looks nice though

seanymph3 wrote on Jul 24, '09
It almost has lemon verbena type leaves........but I doubt its that.

i have no idea what it is......i am not familiar with the trees and shrubbery over there. good luck with the plant i.d., i'll be curious to know what it is, too.

sumac?

forgetmenot525 wrote on Jul 24, '09
It is a young tree / shrub of some sort...............still checking, i'm sure it is nothing exotic, just 'unknown'..

acousticeagle wrote on Jul 24, '09
Well, it doesn't look like a weed, so yes, some investigation required. Maybe some clever commenter will be able to identify it. I remember I got a garden 'intruder' once. It looked just like a white thumb sticking out of my vege plot. It turned out it was a sucker from a lily plant from next door's jungle. I dug down and got it low at the root and cut it out, planted it, and it became a very attractive pot plant. A thumbs up was a good sign.
